Indecent Images Solicitors

The offence covers indecent images of a child (under 18), and is charged according to three things: possession (having control over an image and knowing it's in your possession), making (creating, generating — including with AI — or downloading an image, which can include content that saves automatically while viewing it), and distributing (sharing, sending, uploading or showing an image to others).

Images themselves are classified into three categories by severity — Category A being the most serious, through to Category C — and that categorisation has a direct, significant effect on sentencing.

Maximum sentences reflect that distinction: up to 5 years' imprisonment for possession, and up to 10 years for making or distribution. A conviction also carries a requirement to register on the Sex Offenders' Register.

Investigations often begin from a report, an alert from a technology company, an international referral, or discovery during an unrelated investigation, followed by a forensic examination of devices — which is usually where the real detail of a case, including how images were categorised, first becomes clear.
