Money laundering is an offence under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002, covering the concealment, transfer, or use of property that is, or is suspected to be, the proceeds of crime. Conviction can carry up to 14 years' imprisonment and unlimited fines.
Investigations can be led by a range of agencies depending on scale — the National Crime Agency, the Serious Fraud Office, the Financial Conduct Authority, or HMRC — often involving anti-money laundering (AML) compliance specialists and forensic accountants tracing transactions across accounts.
